University of Chicago
Mean GirlsThe University of Chicago is the site of North Shore’s Mathletes state championship, the final contest in which Cady returns to mathematics and helps secure the team’s title. Its main auditorium turns the competition into a public test of that renewed commitment; afterward, the parking lot becomes the setting for the team’s celebration and a small but telling sign of Cady’s changed sense of belonging.
The Championship Venue
The tournament takes place in the university’s main auditorium. From outside, the building looks impossibly large to Cady, who scans it and wonders how the competitors could fill it—and whether she wants them to. Her uncertainty has a specific cause: she has only just begun to find her way back into mathematics, the day before the contest. The auditorium’s scale therefore makes the championship feel larger than a routine school activity, while Cady’s hesitation keeps the scene grounded in her fragile return to the subject.
The Contest and Victory
Before the team goes on, Ms. Norbury meets them in the auditorium wings and tells them to make her look good. Kevin leads the way to the podium, where the contest begins. As the final problem turns on a limit, Cady quietly repeats the answer to herself, then recognizes that she has found it and says it aloud. The host announces North Shore as the new state champions.
The victory is both collective and personal. Cady shakes Caroline Krafft’s hand with as much sportsmanship as she can manage, while inwardly celebrating; her teammates cheer and the audience applauds. Kevin then rushes forward, tears off his shirt, and shouts at the opposing Marymount team. His exaggerated display of confidence echoes the “alpha beast” behavior associated elsewhere with social dominance, but Cady says it matches how she feels. At the auditorium, competitive success and the confidence she has been rebuilding briefly converge.
The Parking-Lot Aftermath
The celebration continues outside, where the team’s energy remains high. Kevin brings out the Mathletes jackets he had been threatening to order since Cady first met him: blue wool varsity jackets with yellow sleeves. Tim Pak approves of the leather sleeves as he puts his on, and Kevin drapes Cady’s jacket over her shoulders. She immediately feels like a normal high-school girl, in the best possible way.
The location thus frames two connected changes: Cady proves her renewed mathematical ability in the auditorium, then receives a visible sign of membership in the parking lot. The matching jackets make team belonging concrete, while her reaction marks a contrast with her earlier uncertainty about both the competition and her place at school. The University of Chicago setting gives the Mathletes’ achievement its public scale; the quieter moment outside gives that achievement a personal meaning.
